Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the ACTH(4–10) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, modified by replacing the terminal residues with a proline-glycine-proline sequence. The modification removes the parent hormone’s adrenocorticotropic activity while retaining the neuroactive character of the fragment — the reason Semax is studied as a neuropeptide rather than as a hormone analog.
Researchers investigate Semax primarily in connection with neurotrophic signaling. Published preclinical work reports changes in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor expression, along with broad shifts in gene expression profiles, which has made it a recurring subject in molecular neuroscience.
Solas Science supplies Semax as a research-grade compound in a metered nasal spray format at a labeled 100 mcg per spray, prepared under controlled conditions with quality procedures designed to support consistency, reliability, and analytical reproducibility.

What Is Semax?
Semax (CAS 80714-61-0) is the heptapeptide Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro, with the molecular formula C37H51N9O10S and a molecular weight of 813.92 g/mol. The first four residues (MEHF) correspond to ACTH(4–7); the C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro is a synthetic addition.
That Pro-Gly-Pro tail serves the same purpose as in Selank: it confers resistance to enzymatic degradation, extending the peptide’s working life enough to be studied in intact systems. The two compounds are frequently discussed together in the literature for this reason, despite targeting different pathways.
Mechanistic research most often centers on BDNF and TrkB signaling, with additional work on the peptide’s reported interaction with the melanocortin system, the dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, and on its effect on expression of genes associated with neuronal plasticity and inflammation.
About the Metered Nasal Spray Format
This preparation supplies Semax as an aqueous solution in a 10 mL bottle fitted with a metered pump delivering a labeled 100 mcg per actuation — approximately 100 metered sprays per bottle, or 10 mg of compound in total. Actual spray count varies with pump priming and residual volume.
Semax is among the most commonly studied compounds in the intranasal peptide literature. The original Russian research program developed and characterized it primarily as an intranasal preparation, and a large share of subsequent preclinical work has followed that precedent, which makes this format the closer match to the published record.
Researchers who need to control concentration themselves, or who are working in cell culture and solution-phase assays, may prefer the lyophilized powder presentation, which is reconstituted to a concentration of the investigator’s choosing. This metered format trades that flexibility for a fixed, pre-measured dose delivered without reconstitution.
Scientific Research Areas of Semax
Semax is investigated across molecular neuroscience, neurotrophic signaling, gene-expression research, and peptide pharmacology.
Neurotrophic Factor Signaling
The most active research area concerns growth factor expression. Investigators examine:
- BDNF expression and pro-BDNF processing
- TrkB receptor activation and downstream cascades
- Nerve growth factor levels in tissue and culture models
- Neuronal survival and differentiation endpoints
Gene-Expression and Transcriptomic Research
Microarray and sequencing work uses Semax to study broad transcriptional response:
- Expression profiling in cortical and hippocampal tissue
- Genes associated with neuronal plasticity and synaptogenesis
- Inflammatory and immune-related transcriptional programs
- Time-course of expression changes following exposure
Neuroprotection and Ischemia Models
A large preclinical literature examines Semax under experimental insult, including:
- Cerebral ischemia and reperfusion models
- Oxidative stress and excitotoxicity endpoints
- Inflammatory marker expression in injured tissue
- Functional recovery measures in preclinical paradigms
Behavioral and Cognitive Paradigms
Behavioral research with Semax investigates:
- Learning and memory task performance in rodent models
- Attention and exploratory behavior measures
- Stress-adaptation and anxiety-related endpoints
- Comparison with other ACTH fragment analogs

Handling and Storage
Store refrigerated at 2–8 °C, protected from light, and do not freeze — freeze-thaw cycling can degrade peptides in solution and damage the metering pump. Keep the bottle upright with the cap fitted, and clearly labeled for laboratory inventory. As an aqueous preparation this product has a shorter working life than a lyophilized powder; record the date the bottle is first opened and handle it accordingly.
Handle in accordance with standard laboratory safety practice, including appropriate personal protective equipment. The metering pump is intended for controlled dispensing in a laboratory setting only. Keep out of reach of children and unauthorized personnel.
